PORTAXES PETROGLYPHS

CALCOLITHIC-BRONZE AGE
(3.000-2.000 B.C.)

Granite rock, because of its hardness, was the material selected by prehistoric artists, to be the canvas for their petroglyphs, and that is also the reason that allowed the conservation of those designs until now. Petroglyphs are rock carvings made by pecking directly on the rock surface using a stone chisel and a hammerstone. Being exposed during hundreds of years, to weathering and erosive processes by environmental agents, gives petroglyphs their current appearance. Petroglyphs are usually difficult to watch without proper light conditions, and that's why the bests time to see them is early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
